Storage solutions: Furniture with Storage and Style

Where I live in So Cal, land is at a premium.  We often see homes under 2000 sq. feet in size going for close to (or even over!) $1M. With that in mind, I am so blessed to be living in a 930 sq. foot home that’s been in the family for generations. I love our adorable house, and I especially love our wonderful neighborhood. I don’t ever want to move, but 930 sq. feet is not much space for six people, so utilizing the space we do have is key.

Clutter control is the most important piece when it comes to living comfortably in a small area, or in any space for that matter.  I confess that I often laugh at HGTV shows where a family of four with a baby on the way struggle in their three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath 2000 sq. foot home because it’s “too small.” In many cases, families will have the same problem after moving into a larger house due to clutter or simply not using the space they have well. In our home, if an item- be it a small toy or a large piece of furniture- does not have utility or real sentimental value, it is sold or donated. The other piece of the puzzle is finding pieces that do double duty.  I like my storage, especially in our front rooms to be decorative.  We also have furniture, such as our coffee table, that have storage built in.

I fell in love with the Tucker Trunk Coffee Table from Crate and Barrel.  It has three internal storage compartments, which for us hideaway games, the girls’ Tsum Tsums, and extra school supplies. It also comes with a tray that fits in the third compartment, matches the table’s finish, and can be used for decoration. It is a little pricey at $499, but for all it does along with its sturdy construction, it’s well worth saving up for. I saved up Crate and Barrel gift cards in advance of my purchase, and after almost two years of use, it is still a great piece of furniture.

My latest find was the Poppin’ Box Seat from The Container Store.  This seat is a foldable box with a lid that doubles as a backless seat.  It measures 16″ X 16″ square and holds up to 275 lbs. The linen color matches the slipcover on my sofa, and it comes in seven other colors. There is also a Poppin Box Bench that measures 32″ x 16″ across. Both items are on sale during the Container Store’s Organized Day Sale.  The sale runs through September 17.

There’s no reason why organization can’t be fun and pretty. What are your ideas for organization- styled?
